From MAS
It was the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus who coined the phrase “the only constant in life is change”. He might have said it somewhere around 500BC, but with our modern lives in a perpetual state of flux, it seems more relevant than ever.
The theme for this issue is ‘new directions’, and as we explore in these pages, upheavals can be an opportunity to triumph. Whether on a personal level or in a broader societal sense, change can promote innovation, a life pivot can illuminate an exciting new path and challenges can make way for new understandings.
Our cover story this issue looks at why the global food scene could be in for a shake-up and the Kiwi pioneers leading the charge. From edible algae to lab-made milk, experts say the future menu might surprise you.
We take a light-hearted look at the way Generation Z (those aged roughly 10 to 26) are changing the way younger people speak, and we talk to a surgical registrar who retrained in medicine after a career epiphany.
For those nearing the end of their career finishing work can be another major shift. Ahead of the upcoming MAS Retirement Seminar in December, Australian retirement coach Jon Glass fills us in on how to mentally prepare to make the most of this new phase.

Kupu whakataki
Nā te kaimatapaki whakaaro o Kiriki, nā Heraclitus te kōrero “the only constant in life is change”.
Ka mutu, kua āpititia atu he whitiata, he whakaahua ki reira anō hoki.
